Continues with "Classics & Contemporaries"
The Vermont Philharmonic 's 2019 Winter concerts feature two classic and two contemporary works given on Saturday evening, February 16 at the Elley-Long Music Center at St Michael's College at 7:30 pm, and Sunday afternoon, February 17, at the Barre Opera House at 2 pm, Lou Kosma conducting.
The program opens with Vermont composer Erik Nielsen's Fanfare in B flat for Orchestra, a resounding work written for the Vermont Symphony in 2014.
Then the 2018 winner of the Borowicz Memorial Student Scholarship, Henry Wu, will perform the first movement of Mozart's lovely Piano Concerto in A Marjor, K 488, composed in 1786. A junior at Essex High School, Henry is the first Vermonter to receive the Presidential Award for the Arts. He has won several competitions and has been featured in the Cathedral Arts Young Arts Showcase and the Next Generation concerts.
After the classical Mozart concerto, we have a 2017 composition by Rufus Reid, Lake Tyrrell in Innisfree, a sound portrait of New York's Innisfree Garden. Reid is a highly regarded bass performer on the international jazz scene, a successful composer of music in several genres, and an inspiring educator (rufusreid.com).
The program concludes with one of the greatest Classical works for cello, Antonin Dvorak's 1895 Cello Concerto in B minor, op. 104, brilliantly performed by virtuoso soloist Emily Taubl. Now a resident of Burlington and on the music faculty of the University of Vermont, Emily has concertized nationally. She studied at Julliard, Yale, and the New England Conservatory.
The Winter Concert is sponsored by Brent Miller Real Estate, Miller's Country Outfitters and Milne Financial Planning.
