On-Snow Opportunities for People with Disabilities

Past event
Jan 24, 2019, 6:30 to 8 PM

Join athletes and representatives from Vermont's adaptive sports communities for a discussion about their commitments to making active lifestyles a reality for those with disabilities as part of the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum's monthly Red Bench series, on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 6:30pm.

Be inspired by stories of those Vermonters who have overcome disabilities, and those who are making this all happen by empowering people with disabilities to develop independence and well-being and providing them with opportunities to enjoy skiing and snowboarding in Vermont. Learn about advances in adaptive snow sports instruction, equipment and training for adaptive coaches. Panelists include Kelly Brush Davisson, founder of the Kelly Brush Foundation, Patrick Standen, Co-Founder of Northeast Disabled Athletic Association, Maggie Burke, Managing Director at Vermont Adaptive, Joe Hurley, Executive Director of BART Adaptive Sports Center, and Cynthia Needham, President of Friends of Stowe Adaptive Sports.

For decades the Red Bench drew skiers together around the fireplace in the Octagon at the top of Mount Mansfield. The tradition continues today with the Red Bench Speaker's Series that focuses on topics currently relevant to skiing and snowboarding. Doors to the museum at 1 South Main St. in Stowe will open at 6:00 and guests are invited to enjoy the exhibits and socialize. The discussion begins at 6:30. Craft beer provided by series sponsor Collective Arts Brewing, wine and cider will be available. Thanks also to sponsors Sisler Builders and VT Ski + Ride. A $10 entry donation helps support the museum's mission to "Collect, Preserve and Celebrate Vermont's Skiing and Snowboarding Heritage".
