Ethan Allen Homestead – Sunday, January 20th – 2:00 pm
"Learning from the Original People of the Winooski" with Mike Ather
For five hundred generations or more, ancestors of the Abenaki people walked this land we now call Vermont. Often, while walking the Ethan Allen Homestead trails myself, I wonder how many thousands of the "Alnobak", or "Ordinary People", as they called themselves, were interred upon their passing, within the soils on Burlington's Intervale lands. Throughout the ages there must have been thousands of them! To me, the Intervale is hallowed ground, containing the ancestral remains of an extraordinary people; the Original Vermonters.
To honor the memory of these people and call attention to the new Abenaki display village planned for the Ethan Allen Museum grounds in 2019, consider yourself invited and join me to explore some of the fascinating aspects of Abenaki lifeways and the plants they foraged, farmed, imported and hybridized over hundreds of generations. Come and learn how applying aspects of Abenaki daily life and earth care today can improve our modern lives.
