Shape Note Singing

Past event
Jan 6, 2019, 1 to 3 PM

Come join us for Shape-Note singing on Sunday, January 6, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM in the Mitchell Green Lounge, McCullough Student Center, Old Chapel Road, Middlebury College.

Shape-Note or Sacred Harp singing is four-part, a cappella, social and spiritual music. The music is powerful, moving, sublime and raucous, ancient and haunting. It spread from early English, Scottish, and Irish settlers in the New World, to the rural towns of the deep South of the U.S., and now to communities across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Mitchell Green Lounge is located on the top floor of the McCullough Student Center and is accessible by stairs and elevator. Parking is available on Old Chapel Road and adjacent parking lots. Enter from Rte. 125/College St. or Rte. 30/S. Main St.

We sing from the Sacred Harp Song Book. Loaner books are available. We emphasize participation and community, not rehearsal and performance. All are welcome.
