Due to the snowstorm a few weeks ago, Crazy Chase was not able to return. But this Friday's weather will be fine, so he's trying it again!
"Crazy Chase," one of the most colorful characters living in central Vermont in the early 1900s, returns to town via a performance and presentation by Morrisville's Allen Church on Friday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Middlesex Town Hall.
A naturally gifted musician, Alfred "Crazy" Chase was born in Middlesex in 1887. He was a fiddler and piano player who could apparently play any song ever written after hearing it only a single time. He performed at many "kitchen tunks" and dance halls throughout central Vermont. Chase was also known for wearing women's clothes, both on- and off-stage, for most of his adult life. Chase eventually moved to Morrisville, where he continued to entertain townspeople with his music. He died in Morrisville in 1960.
Musician and entertainer Allen Church has been fascinated by stories of Crazy Chase for years. He conducted dozens of informal interviews as he gathered information about Crazy that he has put together in his presentation and performance, which honors northeast fiddling and the independent spirit of both Crazy and the state of Vermont.
The presentation and performance is free of charge and is sponsored by the Middlesex Historical Society. Donations at the door are gratefully accepted.
