I'm pleased to pass along notice of an important event coming up in a few weeks that may be of interest to anyone that wants help clearing a criminal record.

Vermont Legal Aid is hosting a free criminal record expungement clinic on Friday, December 14th from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at the Winooski Community Justice Center at Winooski City Hall. Volunteer lawyers will be available to help you.

Under the law, most misdemeanors can be expunged, except for violent or sex offenses. Four types of felonies can also be expunged: Felony Burglary (not in a home), Grand Larceny, Prescription Fraud, and Criminal Mischief. All dismissed charges can be expunged and in most cases crimes committed before the age of 21 can be sealed. For more information please visit https://vtlawhelp.org/expungement.

Legal Aid encourages folks to make an appointment by calling 802-424-4701 to minimize wait time. They will also accept walk-ins. If someone is located in another county or is unable to make it to the clinic in person, they can set up an appointment to work with an advocate over the phone.
