4th Topic in the Racism in America Series: The Alliance of African Americans and Jewish Americans
Speaker: Rabbi Amy Small, Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, Burlington, VT
African Americans and Jewish Americans have historical ties unlike any other racial and ethnic group in the nation. As African Americans were fleeing oppression in the South through the Great Migration, Jews were also fleeing oppression from Germany, Eastern Europe and Russia. In cities to which they migrated they encountered one another and discovered a common experience of bigotry that led to an alliance that continues to this day. However, this alliance is not without tension and division.
