Middlebury Shape Note Singing Dec. 2

Past event
Dec 2, 2018, 1 to 3 PM

Join us for Shape-Note Singing on Sunday, December 2, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM in the Mitchell Green Lounge, McCullough Student Center, Old Chapel Road at Middlebury College. We sing from the Sacred Harp Song Book. Loaner books are available. All are welcome.

Sacred Harp singing is an early American traditional style of a cappella, four-part, social and spiritual, community-based, shape-note singing. The music is powerful, moving, sublime and raucous, ancient and haunting.

Shape-Note music is known for its the pulsing beat, rich harmonies, powerful poetry and deep spiritual content. Generations of people have found joy, meaning, and community through this music. This inclusive, historic, and democratic community singing tradition is now experiencing a revival throughout the US, Europe, and Asia.

Mitchell Green Lounge is located on the top floor of the McCullough Student Center and is accessible by stairs and elevator. Parking is available on Old Chapel Road and adjacent parking lots. Enter from Rte. 125/College St. or Rte. 30/S. Main St.

For more information, see FaceBook/Middlebury Shape Note Singers, Www.fasola.org. , or contact David Rosenberg, rosenber@middlebury.edu. Our singings are sponsored by the Scott Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and the Music Department.
