On November 15 the Huntington Historical and Community Trust will hold it's Annual Meeting in the Town Hall in Huntington. Special guest Chief Don Stevens of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk - Abenaki Nation will give a presentation. The public is invited. Chief Don grew up in Huntington's lower village and generations of his family are woven into the town's fabric of time.
Don is an award-winning leader, businessman, writer, and lecturer. He helped lead the fight to obtain legal recognition for the Abenaki People in Vermont and successfully helped acquire tribal land for the Nulhegan Tribe, which had been absent for over 200 years.
There will be a short 20 minute film on Abenaki State Recognition to help spur the conversations. Don will discuss how many of his ancestors hid their cultural background for fear of being labeled as an "Indian." His mission is to educate the public and students about Abenaki Culture in the Classroom while spreading the message that culture is something to be cherished, no matter your ethnic background.
