Hello Neighbors,
I invite you to hear the Burlington Choral Society honor Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday with a performance of his glorious Chichester Psalms. It's a thrilling musical setting of Hebrew psalms that conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin says shows off Bernstein's goal "to bring people together regardless of their religions, origins, generations and aspirations in life." It ends with, "Hineh mah tov, Umah naim, Shevet ahim, Gam yahad." ("Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.")
Your neighbors in the chorus will present Chichester Psalms on Saturday, Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m. at College Street Congregational Church in Burlington.
Also on the program, titled Birthday Odes, are Handel's Birthday Ode for Queen Anne, Eternal Source of Light Divine -- as heard at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle -- and Purcell's Birthday Ode for Queen Mary, Come, Ye Sons of Art.
Richard Riley, artistic director, will lead the chorus, with guest artists Mary Bonhag, soprano; Eric Jurenas, countertenor; Andrew Padgett, bass; Jenny Bower, organ; and the Burlington Birthday Orchestra.
Tickets are on sale at the Flynn Box Office, www.flynntix.org and (802) 86-FLYNN. Prices are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.
Hoping to see you in the audience,
Mike Coffey Walden, Vermont
