"The Blood in This Town," a documentary about Rutland's record-breaking blood drive, will kick off the 2018 run-up to the Gift-of-Life Marathon Blood Drive.
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, we invite the community, businesses, religious organizations, teams, civic organizations, schools, clubs and families to join us for this special, free event. Art Jones, producer/director of "The Blood in this Town" will be in attendance and the evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a discussion on how this movie came to be made, hosted by local WJJR personality Terry Jaye, followed by a free screening - and free popcorn.
The film captures Rutland in the mid-2000s, when we were trying to collect 1,000 pints of blood in one day - at the time a feat many thought impossible. We have, of course, since gone on to set a national record, and the film shows the strength and tenacity of Rutland - and it continues to inspire communities nationwide.
Rutland-area residents are invited to attend and enroll their group, business, church or civic group in the Gift-of-Life Community Challenge, an effort to boost this year's GOLM production and help save lives. The team with the most donors at this year's blood drive will win a maple-creemee party for up to 100 people, courtesy of Green Mountain Power, from the Vermont Truffle Company.
The film will be shown at the Rutland Intermediate School auditorium at 65 Library Avenue Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. There will be representatives of the Red Cross onsite to sign up teams and answer questions regarding guidelines of the competition.
