Join us to roll out pie crusts for homemade Thanksgiving pies for the Hardwick Area Food Pantry, community dinners, and others. This project, Pies for People, will celebrate its tenth anniversary this fall, thanks to a loose but devoted collection of businesses, nonprofit organizations, and committed volunteers who make it happen. The coordinators of this effort aim to bake 150 pies in two days right before Thanksgiving. Anyone interested in helping with pie crust rolling on November 14 is encouraged to sign up by contacting Allison Van Akkeren at Sterling College. By the time this year's project is completed, Pies for People will have made more than 1,000 homemade pumpkin and squash pies over ten years. The annual project is organized by the Center for an Agricultural Economy, the Hardwick Area Food Pantry and Sterling College, who collect donations and line up volunteers to bake pies from scratch. This year key help comes from Sterling College's Community Food Action students who will make the pie filling from local ingredients, help roll out the pie crusts and bake half the pies. The 300 pounds of squash needed for the pies are gleaned from High Mowing Organic Seeds. CAE staff washed, roasted, peeled and processed it all this year and made it into buckets of beautiful orange puree. This year flour was donated by King Arthur Flour, butter was donated by Cabot Creamery Cooperative, eggs were donated by Black Dirt Farm, seasonings were donated by Buffalo Mountain Cooperative. Other donations are still coming in and will be acknowledged on labels on each pie box. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Allison Van Akkeren at Sterling: avanakkeren@sterlingcollege.edu. Volunteers will receive coffee, dessert, lots of practice rolling crust, and that warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with doing a good deed! Bring Your Own Rolling Pin! (BYORP)
