The film Resilience contains a wealth of technical information about child development, how developing bodies and brains respond to stress, and offers steps everyone can take to promote resilience in children.
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) harm children's developing brains and wreak havoc on their bodies. Research shows that these experiences puts children at greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time and early death. No segment of society is immune, although the broader impacts of poverty may worsen the risk. Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress. Resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have. It involves behaviors, thoughts, and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone. The one hour documentary Resilience explains these links and introduces a new movement to treat and prevent the Toxic Stress that can be the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose. Caring adults in the community can help create a buffer that mitigates, rather than cements, the effects of toxic stress.
