Integrating Composition Into the Private Studio — free event
Join facilitators Luke Rackers, Erik Nielsen, Matt LaRocca, Tiffany Pfeiffer, & Michael Close for a forum about ways to integrate music composition into the private studio. Share your ideas, success stories, goals, and questions with the group. The facilitators will happily share their insights into the benefits of music composition, ideas for starting new works, and tips for getting students excited about creating music.
Budding Composers Workshop
3-4:45p
Performance of Works in Progress — free to spectators: requires student signup.
Do you have a piece of music for piano, cello, violin/viola, or any combination of the three that you would love to hear performed live? Sometimes you just need to hear a live musician play something in order to make decisions about editing or to know how to evolve your musical ideas! For this workshop, performers will play your work and then you will have a chance to change something about the work and hear it performed again. This workshop is an opportunity to experiment and test ideas for works in the foundational through mid-intermediate levels. Works are limited to 48 measures or a 48 measure section of a larger work.
Musical Emotions Game & Thinking Beyond the Notes
How can you express your emotions in real time through improvisation? What musical decisions can you make to portray specific emotions and feelings? How can you tell stories through music composition? Join Matthew LaRocca, Executive Director of Music-COMP, for this fun game and practice your improvisation and composition skills.
Special Performance & Reception
5-5:30p
We will conclude our Celebration of Music Composition with a performance by Tiffany Pfeiffer, VCFA MFA composition student, and Luke Rackers and Michael Close, featuring a new work from the Abundant Silence catalog. Join us for a light reception after the performance to talk with facilitators and performers.
Students can sign up for the two activities online at: www.abundantsilence.org/composer-mentor-program.html
