Steve Engel Talks Sewing Machines

Past event
Nov 4, 2018, 2 to 3:30 PM

Steve Engel will talk about sewing machines on Sunday, November 4th at the Holcomb House, 188 Main Street E, Johnson at 2 PM. Do you remember your first experience with a sewing machine?

Steve Engel is a sewing machine enthusiast with an extensive knowledge of the Singer brand as well as other brands. Some of us learned to sew on treadle powered or belt powered machines; while many only know the modern electric variety. Steve knows about all of them. He will show several sewing machines which highlight the many changes over the years.

Sewing machines have a long history, dating as far back as 1851. The machines have evolved but still stand the test of time, with some of the older models being highly sought after by collectors and sewing enthusiasts. After opening a local factory in Glasgow in 1867, the machines were flying off the shelves and soon factories opened worldwide. Isaac Singer was the founder of the company, and was the first to create treadle powered, belt powered and eventually electricity powered machines.

Join us at this informative and entertaining presentation at the Holcomb House, sponsored by the Johnson Historical Society. It is free and homemade cookies will be served.
