Top American Cross-Country Skiers to Compete in Stowe:
The 2nd Running of the Trapp Invitational Roller Ski Competition
Stowe VT - November 3rd
For the second year in a row, Stowe welcomes an elite field of cross-country skiers, including Olympians and promising national talent for a rollerski race that finishes in front of the Trapp Family Lodge. A field of athletes representing colleges and clubs from throughout the US will compete in a challenging individual start 10-kilometer race in final preparation for the winter racing season. Please note that Barrows Road will be closed to through traffic from approximately 2:00-3:00pm. Spectators are encouraged to park at the Trapp Family Lodge Outdoor Center parking lot and cheer skiers to the finish prior to 2:00pm. Traffic will be alerted by signage and directed by the Stowe Police during the closure.
The event is the conclusion of the 2018 NENSA Bag Balm Rollerski Race Series – a five race series with a cash purse sponsored by Kathy and Marty Hall. Kyle Bratrud of Stratton Mountain School's T2 Team and Caitlin Patterson of the Craftsbury Green Racing Project, both recent National Champions are leading the series that pays out $500/$300/$200 for the top three places. The public is encouraged to witness this spectacle and visit the Trapp Bierhall at the conclusion of the race for awards and a Winter Kickoff Party to celebrate the cross country skiing community.
Top-ranked New England athletes in their respective age groups will join Olympians Ida Sargent, Sophie Caldwell, Patrick Caldwell and Simi Hamilton for this head to head competition. The majority of the field is comprised of athletes who were named to the NENSA Elite and Development Teams – a group who has demonstrated national and international success. This year the field has been expanded to include more collegiate skiers – and serve as a warm up event for those teams who will compete on the trails of the Trapp Family Lodge at this year's NCAA Championships.
The course begins on the western end of Nebraska Valley Road before turning onto Barrows Road and concludes by climbing Luce and Trapp Hill. The race begins at 2:00pm and skiers are expected to complete the course in approximately thirty minutes. Racers will depart the start in thirty-second intervals, making for non-stop spectating for nearly an hour. The award ceremony will be held at the von Trapp Bierhall at 4:00pm. Spectators are encouraged to attend the party where they can meet athletes and socialize with members of the New England skiing community – tickets can be purchased in advance at www.skireg.com/new-england-winter-kickoff-party or at the door.
