The Green Mountain Club Bennington Section would like celebrate the improvements that have gone into the Bald Mountain Trail / White Rocks by inviting local outdoor enthusiasts, organizations, and community members to the dedication of the Bald Mountain Trail Kiosk. The dedication will take place on Friday, October 26 at 11 AM at the North Branch Street trailhead in Bennington. Carpooling, walking, or riding a bike are encouraged. The trailhead parking lot is on a corner under the powerlines near 449 North Branch Street.
The kiosk now has a map, hike and interpretive information, and an area for seasonal updates thanks to work by Green Mountain Club (GMC) Bennington Section volunteers, Jared Newell Cartography, and GVH Studios. The kiosk and tread ladder were built by the GMC Vermont Long Trail Patrol in June of 2017. The kiosk will be dedicated to the late David Hardy, who dedicated 25 years to GMC stewarding trails in Vermont. As the former Director of Trails for the GMC, Hardy worked tirelessly with his staff and local partners to ensure Bald Mountain Trail projects were executed. He guided local GMC Bennington volunteers in steps they could take to complete the relocation, but he passed before getting to see the completed project.
The Bald Mountain Trail is a blue blazed hiking trail that leads to the local favorite "White Rocks", before summiting Bald Mountain (2,857') in Woodford, where it connects to the West Ridge Trail, or travels east to the Woodford trailhead at Harbour Road. This trail is part of side trail system that connects to Vermont's Long Trail / Appalachian Trail. A majority of the trail is in the Glastenbury Wilderness, a 22,330 acre federally designated Wilderness area managed by the Green Mountain National Forest.
