NORTHERN THIRD PIANO QUARTET
Fall Concerts Montpelier, and Richmond
Featuring the World Premiere of a new piano quartet by Vermont
composer Erik Nielsen, and music of Schumann, Pärt, and Fauré

The Northern Third Piano Quartet performs a program of new and old music this fall in Newport, Montpelier, and Richmond. The Vermont based chamber music group members are Sofia Hirsch, violin; Elizabeth Reid, viola; John Dunlop, cello; and Alison Bruce Cerutti, piano. In celebration of their 6th year of collaboration, they have commissioned a new piano quartet from Brookfield composer Erik Nielsen, The group will give the world premiere in this series, in addition to performing works by Pärt, Schumann, and Fauré.

In 2017 the Northern Third Quartet commissioned Brookfield, Vermont composer Erik Nielsen to create a new work especially for them. Nielsen responded by composing a work in six movements that includes two solo movements and a duet, as well as three movements in which all four musicians play. He felt that this way each of the individual members of the quartet would have a chance to be in the spotlight in addition to playing as part of an ensemble. The work has many of the trademarks of Nielsen's mature style, including lyricism, drama and humor, and shows the influence of different types of music, such as jazz and classical music of different eras. Creation of the work was made possible in part by a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation's Arts Endowment Fund. www.eriknielsenmusic.com
