Gerald Auten: "Graphite Insomnia"
Curated by Dian Parker

Using powdered graphite or graphite pencils, Jerry Auten creates luminous, deeply saturated, mysterious and mischievous works on hot-pressed paper or onto the back of old museum posters and postcards. To the powdered graphite, he adds a bonding element, WD40, turpentine, or linseed oil, often buffing the surface. The work takes many months to achieve the dense metallic, oily surfaces.

Auten is a senior lecturer in Studio Art at Dartmouth College, where he teaches drawing, architecture, and senior seminar. He is also the Director of The Studio Art Exhibition Program. His work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad including exhibitions in Teheran, Mexico City, New York, Chicago and Vancouver.
