Past event
Nov 4, 2018, 3 to 5 PM

Capital City Concerts presents J.S. Bach's Magnificat on Saturday, November 3, 7:30PM at the Saint Augustine Church in Montpelier, and Sunday, November 4, 3PM at the Cathedral of Saint Paul in Burlington.

This all J.S. Bach concert will be a historic event for Capital City Concerts. It features world-renowned vocal soloists, a five-part choir, and an unusually large and colorful orchestra, with strings, trumpets, flutes, oboes, timpani, organ, and harpsichord. In total, upwards of sixty musicians will be involved. The Magnificat, BWV 243, is music of remarkable imagination, color, and tenderness. Though conceived on a grand scale, the Magnificat is a compact work of just 30 minutes. Also on the program will be Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major, BWV 1047, featuring Sycil Mathai-trumpet, Karen Kevra-flute, Randall Wolfgang-oboe, and Lucy Chapman-violin, plus arias including Süsser Trost, Mein Jesus Kömmt, BWV 151, Benedictus from the Mass in B-minor, BWV 232, and Erbarme dich from the Saint Matthew Passion, BWV 244. The professional orchestra, conducted by Richard Riley combines Vermont musicians with instrumentalists from the New York City Ballet and Opera Orchestras, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Orchestra of Saint Luke's.

Four singers will be front and center in these concerts: Soprano Hyunah Yu, a world-renowned Bach interpreter and favorite at Capital City Concerts returns along with mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne who sings frequently at the Metropolitan Opera, and has appeared internationally as part of the Met Live in HD cinema cast series. Vermont Tenor Joshua Collier was hailed as "a great Italian tenor on the make" by The Boston Musical Intelligencer and is Artistic Director of BARN OPERA, in Brandon, Vermont. Baritone David Tinervia, a two-season fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center, was a finalist of the 2016 New England Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
