The Vermont Crafts Council has announced that their fall Open Studio Weekend is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th,10:00am to 4:00pm. Three of the many artists and craftspeople taking part in the weekend event are located in Northfield and looking forward to greeting visitors from the region.
Bill Barnard has taught at Norwich University for 40 years. He primarily is an ornithologist but has studied fish, turtles, and freshwater sponges as well. The beginning of his interest in art and wood carving is reflected in the pages of his field notes. Nearly every page has a quick sketch of a plant, butterfly, or a displaying bird. These sketches were done to document specific traits or characteristics of the animal to enable him to identify them when he returned to the office. Bill spends most days in the shop painting and carving, making animal portraits that are expressive and absolutely faithful to the species depicted. Bill's studio is located at 212 Winch View Road in Northfield. Look for the yellow signs and check out his work.
Fire and Fiber at Blueberry Hill is husband and wife potter and weaver, Peter Evans and Debra Maloney-Evans. They have been involved with arts and crafts since high school, studied art in college and despite career paths that brought Debra to being a Family Nurse Practitioner and Peter an educator, they always planned to return to their love of creating useful items out of clay and fiber. That time has come and they will be in their studios throughout the weekend demonstrating their skills, showing off recent work and talking about their love of crafts. Pottery and weaving will be on display and available for purchase, but not required to pay them a visit. Their studios are located at 107 Evans Road, on route 12A south, toward Roxbury. Look for the yellow signs.
