The Four Freedoms: Freedom of Speech; Freedom of Religion; Freedom from Want; Freedom from Fear. Norman Rockwell, popular author, painter and illustrator of American culture said, "I will paint the Four Freedoms in everyday language people understand, using my neighbors as models."
Join Don Trachte Jr. at the Manchester Community Library on Sunday, October 7 at 4 p.m. as he presents "A History of Norman Rockwell's Four Freedoms: Four Great Paintings Born Out of Three Tragedies." Trachte will discuss what inspired these iconic works, painted in Arlington between 1942-1943, and share stories and information about their creation and significance.
Don Trachte Jr. is the eldest son of artist Donald Trachte. He was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1947. During his childhood in the 1950s, in the wholesome environment of Arlington, Vermont, Trachte Jr. was raised as a neighbor and a friend of Norman Rockwell's family, served as a Rockwell model, and grew up with many of the people depicted in Rockwell's paintings. He attended Arlington High School and Western State College of Colorado with a major in economics. Trachte Jr. has worked for several aerospace companies in sales/marketing and program management. He is currently cataloguing his father's large collection of artwork and artifacts and gives lectures about Rockwell's time in Arlington and of discovering an original Norman Rockwell painting behind a secret wall. He lives in Bennington, Vermont.
