Vermont Shakespeare Festival's Salon presentation of Mary Stuart: Sunday, October 7, 3 p.m. at the McCarthy Arts Center, St. Michael's College

Vermont Shakespeare Festival presents the U.S. premiere of Friedrich Schiller's "Mary Stuart" in a new version by David Harrower. Presented as a staged reading, this is the latest installment in Vermont Shakespeare Festival's Salon Series. A rarely seen epic in a fresh and lean adaptation, this is the only classical play starring two women in power. In a country torn apart by public dissent, terrorism, greed, lust, and pride, two queens fight to the death in this political thriller. 400 years later, the intrigue and violence of Mary Stuart feels ripped from today's headlines. Free, donations encouraged. www.vermontshakespeare.org.
