Calais Conservation Commission Nature Walk on Robinson Hill (9:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6)
Join us for an exploration of some of Calais' beautiful wild lands on the west side of town. The walk includes several stretches of official Calais trails, plus unofficial mountain bike/hiking trails that climb almost to the summit of Robinson Hill, one of the highest places in the town. There are ancient maples and hemlock groves, beaver ponds and (if there are enough leaves down by then) views of the Worcester Range of mountains. Forester, town tree warden and conservation commission member Neal Maker will discuss the area's geology, ecology, land use-history and current management. The walk should take around an hour and 45 minutes. It is approximately three miles and includes climbs and descents.
Directions: The meeting place is on Robinson Hill Road, just over a half mile off of the Worcester Road. From Maple Corner, go west on Worcester Road a little over a half a mile, turn left on Robinson Hill Road and follow it up the hill, past the Ward's home (with probably the best views in Calais), then downhill and back up to where the parking area is located. We are grateful to the landowners who graciously allow hikers and bikers to use their land: Peter Livaditis and Valerie Colis; Nick and Leslie Ward; and, Reed Cherington. Thanks also to Randy Allen and those who helped him build these beautiful trails.
