The Martha Canfield Library will host a talk and discussion on immigration in conjunction with Vermont Reads 2018. The talk will discuss reasons why people migrate, the positive influence of migrants, and the role of the Lawrence mill workers in improving work conditions in New England. The presenter will be Bill Budde, curator of the Russell Vermontiana Collection at the library.
Vermont Reads 2018 features the book "Bread and Roses, Too", by Vermont author Katherine Paterson. Paterson presents a historically accurate story of the mill strike in Lawrence, MA in 1912 as experienced through the eyes of two children who are sent to live in a less hostile, chaotic setting in Barre. Copies of the book are available for loan at the library.
Vermont Reads is a program of the Vermont Humanities Council in partnership with the Martha Canfield Library and the Arlington Memorial High School/Middle School. Please call the library at 802-375-6153 or visit our website, marthacanfieldlibrary.org, for more information and upcoming programs.
