Each film is subtitled in English. Admission is free.
The evening will begin with an introductory Havdalah led by Rabbi Amy Small and a brief introduction about the films we will see by Professor Evtushenko. The first film, entitled "Rabbi," explores the experience of a man who, after years of hiding his faith and living a secular life in Communist Russia and later in Israel, comes to terms with his history and beliefs to become a devoted Rabbi and Jewish leader in his native Russia.
Following "Rabbi" Prof. Yevtushenko will introduce the second film, "Nobody Will Know," a conversation with a several elderly Russian Jewish people who, as homeless orphans, were raised in a Jewish orphanage between 1925-33 and who still consider those years to have been the best years of their lives. According to Yevtushenko, the film tries to depict "the smell of the life in the orphanage using old photos, documents and things which still exist at our heroes' places." Following the screenings Prof. Yevtushenko will briefly describe "Famous Jews," another film she has produced depicting ten famous Russian-Jewish historical figures whose Jewish identity was not necessarily well known. This DVD is devoted to the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution and includes a wide range of historical material. The film highlights pre-Revolutionary Russian life and the first years of Soviet Russia, connecting and depicting them through the prism of the Jewish worldview.
The evening will close with a time for Q&A and conversation with Prof. Evtushenko accompanied by light refreshment. Wine will be available for sale by the glass.
