The Baldwin Library will host Thetford author Annelise Orleck, presenting her new book "We Are All Fast Food Workers Now" on Friday, October 5 at 7:00 pm at the Wells River Congregational Church vestry. Orleck has traveled the globe, meeting leaders of the global living wage movement, and in her book she records their struggles, set-backs, and successes. This event connects with the library's VT READS programming. We began with Katherine Paterson's book about the woolen mill workers' 1912 strike for "bread and roses". Orleck shows us that the story is not over. Garment workers, hotel housekeepers, "big-box" retail workers, farm workers, home healthcare aides, airport workers, fast-food workers, and even adjunct professors are all expected to live on poverty wages in sub-standard and sometimes dangerous working conditions.
