LEAGUE OF VERMONT WRITERS TO MEET IN SHELBURNE

Shelburne–Writers interested in exploring alternatives to traditional publishing are invited to take part in the League of Vermont Writers' fall program, "Other Paths to Publication: Independent Presses and Self-Publishing."

The Oct. 6 event, which includes three presentations and breakout sessions by genre, will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. It will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 5171 Shelburne Rd., Shelburne.

Preregistration is required by Sept. 21. The fee, which includes lunch and morning refreshments, is $42 for League members, $62 for non-members.

For program details or to register online, visit www.leagueofvermontwriters.org. Or send a check, payable to League of Vermont Writers, to LVW, P.O. Box 5046, Burlington, VT 05402, and write "Fall Program 2018" on the memo line. Please note that registration is mandatory as no walk-ins will be allowed.

The fall program will get underway with a talk by Sonja Hakala, a professional writer, editor and book designer from West Hartford, Vermont, who has written 11 books, both traditionally and independently published. She will describe the various avenues of contemporary publishing to help writers discover the best options for their budget, their book and their career as a published author.

Ed Vincent, co-owner of Encircle Publications LLC in New Sharon, Maine, will draw from his many years of experience in independent publishing to discuss book production, cover design and the business side of getting published.

Bill Schubart, a novelist, short-story writer and co-founder of Philo Records, will share his experiences with all types of publishing from traditional publishers to independent presses and self-publishing. The Hinesburg resident also will talk about how perseverance and the right attitude will help a writer achieve success.

The program will include two breakout sessions for participants to network with others working in the same genre and collaborate on an original piece of writing. An end-of-day panel discussion will feature reports from each genre group.

In addition to the all-day program, the League is sponsoring Fall into Words, a free open mic night, the evening before, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Shelburne Town Offices, 5420 Shelburne Rd., Shelburne. Anyone planning to attend should email Alyssa Berthiaume at alyssa.berthiaume@gmail.com by Sept. 28.
