An exhibition of photographs by Dan Higgins At SCOUT & CO in the Winooski Block
Sept. 20 – Oct. 20.
Reception Sunday Sept. 23rd, 1:00 to 2:30 PM

As part of the Winooski Peace Initiative I have been exploring places where people gather, getting to know community stories, and inviting people to make images with me by choosing locations and props that reflect something of them and their relationships to Winooski.

Winooski has always been a rich reservoir of stories. But as the population has become increasingly compartmentalized, there are fewer opportunities for unplanned interactions and sharing of those stories. Because social groups gather in diverse locations it is impossible to find a single venue that could reach an all-inclusive Winooski community. Therefore, for the exhibition at SCOUT I have imagined a downtown where the stories and the people behind them could be celebrated as murals projected onto familiar publicly accessible walls.

Viewers can imagine taking a walk, maybe starting at the old Key bank parking lot, continuing down Main Street past the Post Office and the restaurants, up Follett Street past Papa Franks and the Methodist Church, then strolling over to the O'Brien Center and past Chick's market. You will discover on the walls large portraits of people you might know from your neighborhoods, or from groups you are familiar with. There will be portraits of other individuals you do not know and might like to know more about. There will even be a group singing a song about Winooski you may wish to listen to. If you recognize anyone from the photographs go up to them, tell them you like their picture, and introduce yourselves.
