Easy Intro. to Mah Jongg Sept. 20

Past event

Are you interested in learning Mah Jongg, the Chinese game of number, winds and dragon tiles? Naturalist / Game enthusiast Laurie DiCesare has been teaching a simplified version of the National Mah Jongg League game for many years in venues all over Vermont, upstate NY and Maine. In this "Introduction to Mah Jongg", we will begin with naming the tiles (our playing cards evolved from Mah Jongg tiles so they look similar), showing some simple winning hands and playing a slow-paced practice game. By the second and third rounds, once players have learned the basics, players become more confident with their new skills and we add a bit more complexity.

Jumping in and trying to learn to play the complex hands on the National Mah Jongg League cards can be a challenging experience for a beginner. If you enjoy playing card games in a positive, light-hearted, environment, please give Laurie's Intro. to Mah Jongg a try. After this intro. afternoon, you can continue playing the easy hands and, with some practice, be prepared to play the full game with your neighbors and friends. Laurie's Rule #1: Mah Jongg is for fun!

Laurie requests a "donation" of $10 per player (if we reach our maximum of 8 players, fee will be reduced to $5 per player) to compensate for her time, hand-outs and light refreshments. Directions to 431 East Road, Milton, VT: from Main Street, turn right onto East Road, go 2 miles south; park in the parking lot, perpendicular to the road. If you have any questions, please contact Laurie at NatureHaven@MyFairPoint.net or 802.893.1845.

P.S. Mah Jongg is a great family game that works well for multi generations. It's a great game for teens. There's nothing to memorize but the more you play and begin to observe what's going on around you, the better chances you have of picking up a needed tile or trading for a neighbor's joker that may help you win the game.
