“He’s the real deal,” one of my jazz colleagues said several years ago, describing a “great player” of one of the most challenging low brass instruments.
That “Real Deal” title belongs to slide trombonist Dan Silverman. Dan’s playing demonstrates schooled technique used in the service of melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic fluidity you can not only hear but feel—in other words, art. Real Deals of jazz, such as Dan, meld academic training and on-the-bandstand tutelage. The result: exciting, engaging playing that turns you into a Real Deal Listener.
Dan and I will have the pleasure of sharing the bandstand with Ron and Shane, and our collegial enterprise will invite the spirits of jazz present (including pieces by Dan and George) and jazz past (JJ Johnson and Kai Winding) to join us and you in our Real Deal Community of real music, real listeners, real food.
