STONE: a video of the play by Kim Bent will be shown at the Hardwick Town House, 29 Church Street.
The play tells the story of the people who shaped Barre, Vermont's granite industry. It was inspired by the book "Men against granite," by Mari Tomasi and adapted from oral histories collected by Mari Tomasi and Roaldus Richmond in the 1930's. Characters take the roles of granite workers, their families and people in Barre to tell the story. There is music and dancing, too! The film lasts 1 hour followed by a discussion. This is part of a series of programs for Hardwick's participation in the 2018 VERMONT READS sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. This year's VERMONT READS book is BREAD AND ROSES, TOO by Vermont author Katherine Paterson. The book centers around the 1912 labor strike in Lawrence, MA. Some of the children of Lawrence were sent to Barre, VT during the strike to be cared for by union workers in Barre.
