Black Pullman Sleeping Car Porters

Past event
Sep 3, 2018, 12 to 1:30 PM

This Labor Day, celebrate Rutland's railroading past by learning about the African American Pullman Sleeping Car Porters. Recruited from ex-slaves to look after the needs of wealthy white passengers, the Sleeping Car Porters went on to help pave the way for workers' rights and played an integral role in the government's desegregation of government contractors, and even helped to inspire Dr. Martin Luther King's March on Washington. This free event will include activities for children and refreshments. Sponsored by the Rutland-Area Branch of the NAACP; Unitarian Universalist Church, Rutland; Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home. https://www.facebook.com/events/250543408798274/
