Relocalizing VT: Little Local Gov Power in VT

Past event
Aug 30, 2018, 9 to 10:30 AM

Coming up Thursday on Goddard College Community Radio: Vermont towns and cities can only do what the legislature explicitly says they can do—are they on too tight a leash? And hot summer days like we've had this week mean spikes in electricity use—but a surprising amount of money can be saved by a combination of efficiency, conservation, and solar.

9:00 - 10:00 am
In some states, local governments choose whether to ban or permit fracking, regulate plastic straws or not, or what sales taxes are charged in their jurisdictions. In Vermont, the legislature must approve these and many other things. Karen Horn is a lobbyist for the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. We'll talk about the limitations local governments face in doing things they think will benefit their residents.

These hot summer days can lead to huge costs for electricity, as air conditioners ramp up. But they're being kept down through a combination of efficiency, conservation, and solar power—and the money they save at peak times is amplified through peculiarities of the wholesale electric market. James Moore of SunCommon will talk about a new third-party report they commissioned.
