This year's VT Humanities Council book for VT READS is Katherine Paterson's "Bread and Roses, Too". It's the story of how workers in the woolen mills of Lawrence, MA went on strike in 1912 and sent 30 of their children to stay temporarily with the Barre, VT granite worker families during the winter.
What were conditions like in the mills at that time? Why were children sent away? Why was this strike so historic? How did so many immigrant workers from so many countries manage to collaborate?
Join the Baldwin & Tenney Libraries on a field trip to the Lowell National Historic Park in Lowell, MA on Saturday, September 8 to answer these questions. We'll take a canal boat tour to see how water power drove the mill industry. We'll visit the Mill Girls Boarding House Museum which also includes an exhibit on Lowell's unique immigrant heritage (not unlike that of Lawrence). Finally, we'll visit the Boott Cotton Mill Museum which includes a floor of working looms of the period.
There are 20 seats available for this trip, so reserve your spot soon. Cost for the canal boat tour and museum visits will be $16 per adult, $12 per senior, and $9 per student. Donations towards bus transportation will be gratefully accepted. The trip is appropriate for children age 12 and up.
