On Monday, August 27th at the Savoy Theater, the Vermont Natural Resources Council will present BROKE: The Santa Barbara Oil Pipeline Spill of 2015, an award-winning documentary about the Refugio Oil Spill and the aftermath of this environmental catastrophe.
Doors open at 6:30; Film begins at 7:00pm. Discussion to follow. Tickets are by donation and first-come, but please RSVP so we know how many people to expect: https://www.facebook.com/events/171912490268216/.
Every two and a half days in the US, a significant oil spill fouls the environment. BROKE documents what happened when a buried oil pipeline on California's scenic Gaviota Coast broke in May 2015. Director Gail Osherenko, a former Vermont resident and academic, puts the incident in context by exploring another Santa Barbara oil spill, in 1969, that helped launch the environmental movement, the EPA, and clean air and water laws.
