i Friends and Neighbors,
Every year Branch Out Burlington offers a winter seminar, with topics that have ranged from planting trees with the Nobel prize winner Wangarai Maathai, to the environment with Bill McKibben, to Bees and other related esoterica with Bill Mares, to last year's wonderful presentation by Keith Morris on Permaculture.
No one has ever gone away disappointed (if they were, they were very decent about it, not saying a word that this author every heard), and no one goes away hungry. I believe Branch Out Burlington is getting a bit of a reputation for the home made desserts that seem to be on offer for every thing that we do.

Michael Snyder is Vermont’s Commissioner of Forests, Parks and Recreation.
The buck stops with him, and it is no small task to keep his finger on the forest’s pulse. On Sunday, February 16 at 4 pm, Mike will present a lecture titled “Vermont’s Forests: Connecting People, Place & Time” at the Univ. of Vermont Aiken Building, room 102 for Branch Out Burlington’s winter seminar, co-sponsored by Burlington’s Parks & Recreation Department.
Over 80% of Vermont’s area is covered with forest, and it is Mike’s job to make sure our forests are healthy and productive, and continue to contribute significant revenue to the state’s citizens. He is also our state’s official foliage forecaster, but there’s not too much call for that right now! He will share his thoughts about the important role of trees for the working landscape and will draw links between the forest trees that cover our mountainsides and those that populate our cities.
No one has ever gone away disappointed. There is always time for questions, so bring yours!
Mike, a graduate from UVM, has been the Commissioner since 2010, but before that he had his boots in the woods, serving for 14 years as Chittenden County’s Forester, where he provided land stewardship assistance to private landowners, cities and towns. He also taught forestry courses at UVM for 12 years and continues to write the “Woods Whys” column for Northern Woodlands Magazine.
Branch Out Burlington! is a group of volunteers who help plant and care for the trees of Burlington. Our goal is to promote a vision of a city graced by a variety of beautiful and healthy trees, and a citizenry actively involved with the perpetual expansion and preservation of our urban forest.
