Theremin: a Unique Musical Instrument

Past event
Aug 14, 2018, 10 to 11 AM

Kevin Colosa, a music teacher from St. Johnsbury, will demonstrate the theremin on August 14th at the Greensboro Free Library at 10:00 AM..

The theremin is a unique musical instrument created in 1922 by Soviet scientist Leon Theremin. The modern theremin is a small electronic box with two antennas, one vertical and two feet high and one horizontal looped one.

Colosa will not touch the instrument to play it but will control the pitch and volume by the movement of his hands and fingers in the electronic field surrounding the antenna. Objects in the surrounding area, including people, can affect the electronic field. It can run from one cycle per second up to several thousand per second & will run pitches from zero beat up to where dogs can hear it but we cannot as it plays weird, eerie, spooky, noisy sounds.
