Our last summer reading program at the library for the season is coming up next week on Wednesday, August 8 at 10 AM! Kids are invited to the Jeudevine Library to learn to carve and to learn a little about the granite industry in Hardwick and Vermont! This is part of the Libraries Rock summer programs at the library and part of the 2018 Vermont Reads program sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. This year's book is Bread and Roses, Too by Vermont's award-winning author Katherine Paterson. The book follows young Rosa whose mother joins the great strike of 1912 in the textile mills of Lowell, MA. She is one of the children sent to the homes of Union members in Barre who work in the granite industry. This era was when Hardwick had a booming granite industry. Library Director Lisa Sammet will show kids how to carve using soap. Pretend you are a granite carver! Everyone will be able to make something to take home. Suitable for kids ages 5 and up. The younger children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
