Brookfield Ice Cream Social Aug. 12!

Past event

What's happening at the Brookfield Historical Society's Marvin Newton House on Sunday, August 12th? It's the Annual Helen Daly/Margaret Stone Ice Cream Social with ice cream, a garden tour, a Jackie Wilder memorial, and music by the Bear Mountain Jammers.

Helen Daly and Margaret Stone were the best of friends and delighted in the Ice Cream Social, that has been held every August since 1985, at the Marvin Newton House at 1133 on Ridge Road in Brookfield. The two recognized this as an important time for neighbors and friends to come together to enjoy a time of community and conversation. In 2010 the annual event was named after these two ladies, Margaret a year round resident and Helen who had summered in Brookfield after 1961.

This year's event is especially meaningful as a granite garden bench will be dedicated in memory of Jackie Wilder, the Marvin Newton House' much loved Curator, from 1984-2017. The featured museum exhibit this summer, curated by Elinor Gray, is a display of chairs made by Brookfield craftsmen Ara Howe and Normus Goodale. Both men crafted these fine pieces in workshops located on Ralph Road in Brookfield, in the mid 1800's. Master Gardener, Brigitte Lackey, will be on site to share her knowledge and expertise on the lovely historical gardens she is bringing back to life at the MNH. The Bear Mountain Jammers will once again share their music with all, as ice cream and cookies are enjoyed on the lovely grounds.

All are encouraged to attend. Admission is free but donations to support BHS activities are most welcome. The Marvin Newton House is open every Sunday in July and August, from 2-4 P.M. See you there!
