CREATING A LIFE BOOK WITH YOUR CHILD, Tuesday September 11, 2018 6:00-8:00
A life Book can be a valuable tool for a foster or adopted child. The Life Book holds their life story and puts their information together to help your child make sense of his/her narrative and history. Service providers often recommend to foster and adoptive parents to create this book, but it often feels like a daunting task. Please join an experienced adoptive parent and a child's mental health clinician to learn more about the usefulness of the Life Book as well as concrete examples of how you can individualize this project to work for you and your child.
USING QUALITY LITERATURE TO SUPPORT THE EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR CHILD: Tuesday, October 9th, 6:00-8:00
Young children deal with many of the same emotions adults do. Children get angry, sad, frustrated, nervous, happy or embarrassed, but they often do not have the words to talk about how they are feeling. Instead, they sometimes act out these emotions in very physical and inappropriate ways. Understanding emotions is a critical part of children's overall development. It is up to adults to teach children to understand and deal with their emotions in appropriate ways. Please join a Vermont Early Literacy Initiative trained public librarian and a child's mental health clinician to learn more about how children's literature can support the child's social and emotional development, which is the foundation for all other areas of learning. (Attendees will receive a free children's book to keep.)
-The content of this training is geared toward children/youth who are developmentally within the early childhood stage.
DISCUSSING DEATH WITH YOUR CHILD- Tuesday, November 13, 2018 6:00-8:00
Although death is an inevitable part of life, discussing death with your child can be uncomfortable for many parents, so we tend to avoid it. It is our responsibility as parents to ensure that our children are aware of death and know that it is not a taboo topic. When we discuss death with our children, we are giving them information, recognizing the feelings that may come along with thinking about death, and supporting our own beliefs and values for what happens after a loved one dies. Please join a library director, and a child's mental health clinician in a 2 hour training on how to discuss death with your child using quality children's literature.
Participants will receive a free children's book.
