Each year, VT Humanities Council selects a book for communities to read and discuss together. This year's pick is Bread & Roses, Too by beloved VT author Katherine Paterson. The book follows two fictional children from Lawrence, MA to Barre, VT during the 1912 woolen mill strike which came to be known as the "Bread & Roses" strike. During the winter of 1912, strikers' children were sent to several other cities (including Barre!) to be temporarily fostered, since living conditions were so precarious at home.
Learn more about this historic strike, and its connection to VT, at a talk by Dr. Robert Forrant, history professor at U. Mass – Lowell on Sunday, August 5 at 4:00 pm at the Tenney Library in Newbury. Dr. Forrant's special areas of study include labor issues and immigration. He co-authored the book Lawrence and the 1912 Bread and Roses Strike which features a full collection of photographs.
This program is co-sponsored by the Tenney & Baldwin Libraries. Copies of Katherine Paterson's book are available to borrow at both libraries, courtesy of the VT Humanities Council, and other related programs will follow in the fall.
