Genetic genealogy is a recent field of genealogical research that involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals. Ancestry, 23 and Me, Family Tree DNA: these are just a few of the companies that now offer this service. While the amount of information available through these services can be very helpful, the information can also be complex and difficult to decode.
Genealogist Alana Considine will present a talk on genetic genealogy at the library on Thursday, August 2 at 7pm. Alana will provide an overview of the information that DNA tests can provide, help to break down what the results mean, and explain how to make best use of the information that a test will provide. She will discuss ethical issues related to the discovery of "non-paternity events" and biological parents previously unknown as well.
Genealogy enthusiasts at all levels are welcome to this presentation. Those who have just started to think about DNA testing and those who have been puzzling over results for months will glean new information and ideas.
