July 21 and August 8
Back by popular demand the Isle La Motte Historical Society (ILMHS) in cooperation with the Champlain Black Marble Company will be offering a tour of the only operating quarry on Isle La Motte, the Goodsell Quarry, which has been in operation since 1875. Randy Patnode, manager of the quarry, will be giving a 1 to 1.5 hour tour of the quarry operations. The tour registration begins at 1 pm at the Historical Society Campus located at the intersection of Main Street and Quarry Road and costs $20 per person. The tour is limited to 22 people, 10 years old and older. Last year tours were over subscribed so we encourage you to contact Terry (802-928-3392) to pre-register. Randy is the third generation of his family to work in this quarry. He will explain current rock excavation processes and how they have changed over time on Isle La Motte. Moreover, the chances are high that you'll see some fantastic 480 million year old fossils. Matt Spear, Isle La Motte stone mason, and Terry Anderson, geologist, will also be available to answer your questions on the uses of the quarried rock and the geology of this rock formation. This is a fundraising event for the Historical Society. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear closed toe shoes. The tour compliments the Historical Societies "Quarry Industry" exhibit that describes the long history of quarrying on the island, starting with mining the limestone to burn in lime kilns to create mortar for the buildings in Fort St. Anne in the late 1660s.
