There is a Better Deal for Burlington - Come learn the latest about the sale of Burlington Telecom.

This Friday July 20th at 7 PM at Burlington Cohousing (East Village Drive off East Avenue) Dean Corren, one of the interveners in the case before the Vermont Public Utility Commission, will give us the latest on the Burlington Telecom Sale and what he and others are doing to get a better deal for Burlington Citizens. Please come and bring family and friends.

Late last year, the City ignored a multi-year public process, and made a last-minute deal to sell Burlington Telecom (BT) to Indiana-based Schurz Communications. But any deal to sell our telecom must be approved by the Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC). We think it's illegal.

In May, six Burlington residents asked the PUC to intervene in the case (known as "Champlain Broadband"). We oppose this deal because it unnecessarily loses Burlington taxpayers at least $15 million dollars, and violates the state law and the City Charter.

In a huge victory for taxpayers, the PUC rejected all of the arguments made by the City and Schurz that taxpayers have no right to get their $16.9 Million taxpayer investment back. We now have the same rights to get information and provide testimony as other parties to the case. We will show how the City is trying to transfer the value invested in BT by Burlington taxpayers to a private, out-of-state firm.

If you pay taxes in Burlington, we are your voice. The law says that the cost of BT can't be paid by taxpayers, and that the PUC must ensure that doesn't happen. The intervenors intend to hold the PUC and the City to the law. We paid for BT and we deserve a better deal. And we can get one.
