Richmond Water Commission Rate Discussion Feb. 10

The Water and Sewer Commission is having another rate discussion at 7:00 PM on Monday. This topic was also discussed at last week’s meeting. Since the commission does not make their meeting minutes available on the town website, I will try to summarize that important discussion here. I do not have detailed notes, so corrections may be warranted.

The commission decided to move toward replacing their current controversial and highly unusual rate scheme that was implemented last year. The current plan bases a user’s quarterly charge primarily on a previous year’s water usage. Current usage is a smaller component of most resident’s bills.

The commission is favoring a new plan with two components. There would be a flat fee for four different user categories, residential single unit, residential multiple unit, business and institutional. There would also be a variable component based on current water usage.

The commission discussed dividing the business category into subcategories based on size (small, medium, large) or function (restaurant, office, industrial). The commission did not discuss specific dollar amounts.

Our water rates will most likely continue to be high for years to come. Given these rates, it is important that they be perceived as fair. I encourage those concerned to pay attention to the upcoming discussions. Hopefully the district will be able to select a new scheme that all will support.
