The Tunbridge Historical Society's "Tunbridge Speaks" program this Tuesday will relate some World War II experiences of Harry E. Howe, M.D., of Lebanon. The 7:30 p.m. program at The Tunbridge Church will feature readings from Howe's 2012 memoir, "A Journey From Tunbridge."

An Advanced ROTC student, Howe graduated from UVM in 1943, commissioned as a second lieutenant. Two weeks later he was on active duty in the U.S. Army, enrolled in Infantry Officer Candidate School followed by training with an armored infantry battalion. Howe shipped out for England 15 days after the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion of Normandy.

He saw action against the Germans in France where his company was captured in January 1945. Howe and others escaped during a raid by Gen. George Patton and were recaptured and locked in rail boxcars for several days en route to a prison camp that was liberated on April 29, 1945.
