Vermont Reads is the Vermont Humanities Council's Statewide One-book Annual Community Reading Program. This year's chosen book, "Bread and Roses, Too" by Katherine Paterson highlights the 1912 "Bread and Roses" strike in the Lawrence, Massachusetts textile mills. Kicking off our Vermont Reads Program, the library is pleased to host Mark Greenberg, educator, writer, musician and media producer with his program "Solidarity Forever: Songs of Union and Labor" on Monday evening, July 9th at 7 O'Clock in the Library's SAL room. Greenberg surveys American labor songs from the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution through the Industrial Workers of the World, (known as the "Wobblies"), and into the coal wars of the 1930's, showcasing protest songs and satire, both recorded and live. Both entertaining and educational, "Solidarity Forever" gives us pause to reflect, as we celebrate our Independence Holiday, on our right to dissent and the courage it takes.
