SOLIDARITY FOREVER: SONGS OF UNIONS AND LABOR
Contact: Judi Byron 244-7036

Vermont educator, writer, musician, and media producer Mark Greenberg will present "Solidarity Forever: Songs of Union and Labor" at the Waterbury Library on Monday, July 9th at 7:00 PM. Using live and recorded music, Mark will survey American labor songs from the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution through the coal wars of the 1930s. This free, educational program is sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.

"Solidarity Forever…" will kick off the Library's participation in the 2018 Vermont Reads Program, also sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. This year's Vermont Reads book is Katherine Paterson's "Bread and Roses, Too", a historical novel of the 1912 Bread and Roses strike in the Lawrence, Massachusetts. The book shows the strike as seen through the eyes of an Italian-American girl and a runaway boy. These two children are sent temporarily out of harm's way to foster families in Barre, Vermont, as children actually were during the strike. Copies of "Bread and Roses, Too" are available to borrow from the Waterbury Public Library.
