Community Town Hall Meeting: Support Our Nurses

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The Alliance in Support of UVMMC Nurses invites everyone concerned with the future of health care and the working conditions of nurses and other Medical Center staff to this important event on Friday, June 22. UVM Medical Center nurses are bargaining for improved working conditions, safe staffing and fair compensation — including at least $15/hr. for everyone who works at the hospital. Come learn about the issues in negotiations between the union and the Medical Center, and how community members can help secure a fair contact and quality patient care at our region's Level 1 Trauma Center.

Please spread the word!

6pm, Friday June 22 at Burlington High School Auditorium, 52 Institute Rd.

5 Reasons to Support the Nurses
5 reasons you should support the nurses win their demands and a fair contract.
Alliance in Support of UVM MC Nurses

1. Priorities

Rather than investing in their nurses, the hospital's priorities are executive compensation and construction projects. CEO John Brumsted made $2.1 Million in 2015 alone.

2. Wages

Vermont should not be a low-wage state. Vermont is 47th in nurses' wages when cost of living is considered and the union's $15 minimum wage demand for support staff is an important step toward a living wage for all Vermont workers.

3. Safety

There are 130 vacancies due to in part to low wages. Short-staffing is built into the hospital plan, creating a cycle of overwork that leads to stress, burnout, and lower quality care.

4. Rights

The nurses' union has filed 21 unfair labor practice complaints due to their treatment during negotiations. Though forced to take a strike vote in parking lots off hospital grounds, the nurses rallied to a 94% vote to authorize a strike.

5. Respect

The executives have ignored the nurses' proposals at every turn. From a living wage to safe staffing, all are beneficial for nurses and patients. Join the Alliance in Support of UVM MC Nurses to help the nurses win these demands and a fair contract. We are all worthy of a better hospital.
